Podcast: Introduction to Careers in Social Investment

We're launching our new podcast for those looking to make the first steps towards a career in social investment

Big Society Capital hosted its bi-annual Introduction to Careers in Social Investment event last week, which for the first time was available both in person and via webinar to increase access to the insight offered. We’ve created a podcast of the event that can be accessed at any time alongside the slides for those interested in exploring a role in social investment.

The event aimed to provide a brief overview of social investment before delving into the wide range of roles available in what is a growing global and domestic market. I then reflected on the key questions people could consider when deciding what role is right for them. Finally, I gave some top tips for people applying for roles in social investment (I wrote a blog on these tips last year for those interested in learning more).

The attendees then heard from a panel reflecting the diversity of roles in the UK social investment market including Claire Goodwin from Social Investment Business as an investor into charities and social enterprises; Giles Thomas who is a policy advisor on social investment products in DCMS’s Government Inclusive Economy Unit; Dougie Sloan from Big Society Capital to give the wholesale investor perspective; and finally Arti Bareja who advises social ventures at ClearlySo.

The panellists shared their own journeys into social investment, some intentional others by accident, and reflected the diversity of the market. Each explained a little about their organisation and its place within the social investment market, and finally gave an insight into their day to day roles – while all different, none had a ‘typical day’.

Big Society Capital is aiming to host similar events every six months, inviting in a range of speakers from across the social investment sector to share their perspectives – join the Big Society Capital careers mailing list to find out when the next one will be held.
