The Big Society Capital Board has appointed Stephen Muers, Head of Strategy and Market Development at the organisation, as acting Chief Executive with effect from 25th May, when current CEO Cliff Prior moves on to his new role as Chief Executive Officer of the Global Steering Group for Impact Investing.

Stephen has been working with Big Society Capital since 2016. Previously a Senior Civil Servant for many years, he brings a depth and breadth of experience to his new role of leading the organisation for an interim period. During his time in central government, Stephen held senior policy and strategy roles including in the Ministry of Justice and the Cabinet Office, and has held board positions in the public and voluntary sectors. He led the work on Big Society Capital’s revised strategy in 2017 and has been leading the business planning function since. Stephen has shown outstanding team leadership and has also led Big Society Capital’s Early Action investment focus area.

Big Society Capital’s Board and Executive Committee have unanimously backed Stephen’s appointment which will run until a permanent replacement is found. The leadership transition between Stephen and Cliff will now get underway. Big Society Capital’s priority remains the response to COVID-19, supporting our sector in this immensely challenging time. Stephen will continue the work with Executive Committee colleagues to provide as clear a direction and sense of priority as possible at this time of change, maintaining the strong external relationships that are so essential to support charities and social enterprises.
