Young people’s mental health and wellbeing is a big challenge in the UK. In a recent study of 8,000 16–24-year-olds, half said they felt persistent feelings of hopelessness. This has doubled in the past 10 years. Mental health issues are particularly prevalent amongst young males, a demographic that has the highest rate of suicide.
Despite many mental health apps being available, SPOKE founder Ariana saw there was a lack of culturally relevant and appealing methods for young people to look after their wellbeing.
SPOKE is a music-led wellness app supporting young people under 25 years-old to improve their mental health. It aims to simplify self-care through the power of music and reach people from diverse backgrounds who are underserved by more traditional wellbeing offerings.
Focusing on early intervention, the app generates a personalised music therapy experience, helping listeners in a range of areas including sleep, stress, and confidence.
Each SPOKE music session is created by producers and emerging artists in the UK that have been trained by a team of clinical psychologists, therapists and neuroscientists. This technique of creating music with positive mental health at its core has the same impact as scientifically proven therapeutic practices.
The SPOKE app is offered for a 7-day free trial after which users pay a monthly subscription fee to continue to access all of the app’s content.
SPOKE has received social investment from Ada Ventures and Bethnal Green Ventures.
SPOKE has reached over 15,000 people and has a 4.9 star rating on the App Store.
As an early-stage startup with impact at our core, it’s vital for us to grow with the right people and social impact investors are a key part of that journey. Social impact investment has enabled us to further develop the product and train more artists to create music that can have a positive impact on mental health.
