James is the Head of Engagement at Big Society Capital, responsible for building awareness and helping grow social impact investment. He leads the Engagement Group which includes investor engagement, social sector engagement and communications.
Prior to joining Big Society Capital, James was the Executive Director of Engagement at Teach First, a charity that develops and supports teachers and leaders who are determined to make a difference where it's needed the most. With over ten year's experience, James helped build Teach First into the UK's largest recruiter of graduates and grew financial support from £1 - £10 million annually.
He previously worked as a BBC News Correspondent, specialising in education, health and social issues. Whilst at the BBC, James won awards including RTS for Best Regional TV Documentary and Education Journalist of the Year. He also spent two years overseas with the BBC in Washington DC.
In addition to his roles on Big Society Capital's Investment Committee and Executive Committee, James is the Chair of Literacy Pirates which provides after-school, year-long programmes to improve the reading, writing, confidence and perseverance of children who are falling behind at school or have less opportunities.
