Head of Communications

Salary: Circa £90,000

The opportunity

Big Society Capital is seeking a Head of Communications to lead the Communications team. This senior role offers an outstanding opportunity to help shape the future of the social impact investment market and lead the positioning and communications strategy for the UK’s leading social impact investor. This will provide a platform for Big Society Capital to create energy around the problems we are seeking to tackle, inform and inspire potential investors and partners (from the financial, public, and social sectors) to work with us, and to amplify the learnings from our work to influencing the wider system for lasting change.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director of Engagement, the Head of Communications will be responsible for overseeing our digital presence and engagement with the media, and national and local Government and policy makers. They will also play a key role in shaping our new five-year strategy set to launch in 2025.

The successful candidate will be an ambitious communications leader with exposure to or an interest in the social finance sector, and experience in setting and implementing communications strategies that convey complex concepts clearly to a range of audiences. Collaborative and inclusive, they will also bring outstanding management and influencing skills.

  • Key internal responsibilities

    • leading, motivating, and championing the communications team acting as a professional role model, while ensuring colleagues’ continuing professional development;
    • contributing as a member of the Senior Management Team to the governance of the wider organisation and the development of a new 5-year strategy to be launched in 2025;
    • taking overall responsibility for the growth and development of the Big Society Capital website, social media and other digital communication channels;
    • overseeing integrated marketing communications campaigns (including public and media relations campaigns), with team leads where relevant, to raise awareness and support engagement with Big Society Capital’s activities;
    • ensuring research is carried out to monitor Big Society Capital’s brand, reputation and the effectiveness of its communications as well as gain stakeholder insight
    • managing internal communication and ensuring the interface between the organisation’s leadership and its employees is effective;
    • ensuring everyone is kept up to date with key activities and events;
    • working with the HR team to optimising employee engagement through internal communications.
  • Key external responsibilities

    • developing and delivering the current communications strategy to ensure a flow of content to raise awareness and improve understanding of social impact investment, Big Society Capital and its work amongst its priority audiences;
    • taking overall responsibility for all engagement with the Government both national and local as well as policy makers especially at a time of political change, as well as relevant international bodies to support our work;
    • taking overall responsibility for all engagement with the media, including media releases, media contacts and relationships, briefings and press conferences;
    • supporting spokespeople for Big Society Capital and act as the main point of contact for communication matters with partners and stakeholder organisations;
    • supporting the growth of the publicly listed SBSI Impact Trust working with our partner Schroders to provide marketing insight and content;
    • creating and leading an effective PR programme to raise the profile and understanding of Big Society Capital and social impact investment with key stakeholders;
    • developing and maintaining effective business relationships with marketing and communications supplies and advisers to ensure best value for money.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate evidence of the following skills, capabilities, and experience:

  • Essential Experience

    • senior team leadership;
    • extensive track record dealing with and influencing media for key audiences – particularly financial;
    • leadership of strategic coordinated communications;
    • track record of developing and delivering successful internal and external communications strategies.
  • Desirable Experience

    • financial sector, impact investment and/or social sector experience, knowledge, and contacts;
    • working in complex organisations with multiple stakeholder communities.

    • Location: We are a UK-based business with an office in the Chancery Lane area of London, accessible to a number of public transport links. Colleagues typically spend 40% - 60% of their working hours in the office, and the remainder from home.
